Le Vauclin, Martinique — since 2008

“More than a place,
a home for creation.

K-AREA is a workshop, my workshop. A space for making, equipped over the years, open to artists and their projects.

In time, it became the home of everything I undertake: alone, with others, in the service of others.”

— Georges-Emmanuel ARNAUD

The workshop

The same place
since 2008

I am an artist. K-AREA is my workshop first: the place where I photograph, where I sculpt, where I scan, where I edit, where I get things wrong before I get them right.

I come from photography. Trained in art history and image-making, I learned the craft as an assistant, retoucher, digital operator and publisher’s assistant, alongside Robert Delpire, Sarah Moon, Humberto da Silveira and many others, then through nearly twenty years of retouching for haute couture and magazines. To find out more: georgesemmanuelarnaud.com.

It is a space for making that equipped itself, year after year, as my projects demanded. Film, digital capture, motion capture, scanning, real time: every tool arrived because I needed it for a project or a line of inquiry. We move from research to making, then to creation, and finally to sharing the work, here or elsewhere.

What gets built here quickly outgrows one pair of hands. I invite artists, I take in projects, and those who come to work here find the tools and the time.

That is how the place became the home of what I run: ANISOTROPIE since 2018, CARIALITY Studio since 2021, and whatever comes next. They are hosted here… Before the structures, there is a person and their workshop.

To create the machine room, I was supported by the Direction des affaires culturelles de Martinique, the French State’s cultural affairs office on the island. We are proud that the State, and through it the territory of Martinique, trusts us to keep moving forward.

“Making and unmaking, building and undoing — in motion, without agitation.”

The name

Kare, in Creole, is the square. Not a shape: a place. The one where people meet.

The K is for Kenya, my daughter: it's her first name. The studio carries it until she takes it over.

Want to come and work here?

Tell me what you want to do, over how many days, and with what crew. I answer myself.
